These classic chess pieces are named after Howard Staunton, who was considered one of the best players in the world. The knight, the most complex and unique piece in any chess set, is a realistically carved horse's head. Staunton's horseman was most likely inspired by the sculpture on the Parthenon's east pediment. The metal Manopoulos Staunton reinforces this architectural history of the original figures while maintaining respect for their timeless design.
