Staunton chess pieces - the ones we know and love, the ones we just think of as chess pieces. These classic chess pieces are named after Howard Staunton, who was considered one of the best players in the world. The horse, the most complex and distinctive piece in any chess set, is a realistically carved horse's head. Staunton's horseman was most likely inspired by the Parthenon's east pediment sculpture.
